There are three lighthouses on Nantucket, all with their own unique features. Due to modern technology, these are not functioning lighthouses, but are still beautiful to look at.
Brant Point Lighthouse:
Due to nature, fire, age and cheap building materials, this is the 10th version of this beacon of light. This current structure is over 110 years old and is the most iconic of them all. Visitors toss a penny into the sea in the hopes that they will return.
Sankaty Head Lighthouse:
This original lighthouse named for the native indian word for "highland". Built in 1850, this icon made from brick and mortar was predicted to fall into the ocean around 2007. At that time, it was moved 400 feet from its previous location. Not open to visitors, you can stroll the grounds year round.
Great Point Lighthouse:
On the northernmost point of the island, built in 1784 originally of wood, destroyed by fire in 1816, replaced by a stone tower which fell over in 1984, replaced again by a 60 foot replica of the original. The grounds can be accessed by a 7 mile beach walk or by a 4x4 vehicle or by 4x4 vehicle tour (The Trustees of Reservations).
